I don't want to live in a mansion where ev'ry toy
Is delivered on Santa's first stop
I don't long to have a form-fitted tree
With a perfect angel on top
A holiday like this is not for me
Please, no perfect gifts...
Or the ideal family
Give me an imperfect Christmas!
A Christmas of gangly children
Who smile with gap-toothed grins
Who fidget, laugh and have sparkling eyes
All revealing their excitement within
Send me an imperfect Christmas
Where I must scrimp and sacrifice to give
The simple gifts that'll never be enough
To express all the love I feel within
Give me a tree that's slightly tilted
Or one that has some branches missing
To display my mismatched ornaments
From years past with their mem'ries and blessings
I want several presents wrapped imperfectly
Uneven folds, loose ribbons, and bunched tape
It's even better when the paper gets cracked
Worn out from too many excited shakes
So sing me some off-tune carols
Let me stand in a few long shopping lines
Help me graciously endure the lonely thoughts
That grow compassion and remind me to be kind
Let me be part of an imperfect family
Who still love each other in spite
Of all our differences and careless mistakes
Who forgive each other when we fight
Please give me an imperfect Christmas
For each moment is a treasured part
Delivering the true spirit of the season
They are tender embraces to my heart
